NARAL Pro-Choice America

NARAL Pro-Choice America describes itself as “the leading national advocate for personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose.” Its president is Nancy Keenan, a former Democratic candidate for the House of Representatives from Montana.

Because nonprofit organizations do not necessarily have to disclose their donors, tracking donations to NARAL Pro-Choice America is difficult. However, Public Citizen reports that Ted Turner and Jane Fonda’s Turner Foundation Inc., while headed by former NARAL board member Cecile Richards, gave the advocacy group $3.1 million dollars. NARAL is also a member of America Votes — an umbrella 527 organization for pro-Democratic groups — of which Richards was president. She was also a founding partner of another liberal 527 group, America Coming Together.

NARAL monitors legislation and court cases about the abortion issue at the federal and state level. It has issue briefs on abortion, birth control, sex education and other topics. It rates House and Senate members on their voting records.

NARAL Pro-Choice America is a prominent advocate of abortion rights, and its Web site is a comprehensive but biased guide to that perspective.
